back on tuesday!

have a great labor day holiday if you live in the states! if not, have a great weekend! i'll be back after the long break is over with four new fugitives!

peanut jimmy carter

since i'm still super exited about barack obama accepting the democratic nomination, i thought i'd end the week with one last democrat. here's former president jimmy carter made from peanuts and natural peanut butter.

i could gush about my love for former president carter and his wonderful humanitarian work for PAGES but i'm sure you're getting weary of the politics. so let's just leave it at "I LOVE YOU, JIMMY CARTER!!!!" and move on.

dnc headliners, day 1-- dishelle obama

firt up, hello, make readers! thanks for clicking though! (many thanks, moxie!)

i try not to let politics seep into this blog. i really do. HOWEVER, i've got dnc fever. to be honest, i've been waiting for this convention since 2004.

so for four days the fugitives will be dnc headliners. first up is dishelle obama!

(michelle obama on a dish.)

i'll be keeping commentary on these very basic. partially because i don't want to cram my political leanings any further down anyone's throat but mostly because i want to catch as many of the speeches in denver as possible!

ira glass

ira glass on a glass bottle.

even though i admire ira glass' work, i have to admit that most of the time "this american life" depresses the hell out of me. (but then again, i get extremely anxious when i watch "curb your enthusiasm", so it's probably just me...)

sleestack (you have to scroll a bit) on pancakes.

it's actually a short sleestack. kinda' like the video i linked to.

the cho dough

(margaret cho on pizza dough)

did you see "the cho show" last night on vh1? i'd been looking forward to it ever since i learned it was in production! sooooo goood!

leff and i had pizza while we watched it. margaret's visage is underneath all of the toppings. (which is guess is kind of weird....)

anyway, margaret cho and pizza! two of my favorite things! whoo!

horseradish

secretariat made from horseradish.

i know what you're thinking, you're thinking "omg!!1 p0n1es!!!1!!". (well, maybe not. that joke is pretty old...) still, secretariat and his triple crown win have always been pretty important to me. why? well, for starters, he won the first leg of the triple crown in may of '73, my birth month.

also, i mean, you've seen the footage of him in the belmont, right?

i got to see the old guy before he died when he was out to pasture at claiborne farm in kentucky. i'll bet you didn't know i was so goofy about the ponies, did you?

p.s.--there's still time to enter the contest! more info here!

Bring and Brag Lab!

just a reminder that i'll be talking about suspect and fugitive tonight at velocity sometime between 6-8pm (pdt)!

if you can't make it, the presentation will eventually be available as a podcast. still, hope to see you there!

don't forget, you can still enter for your chance to win two packs of suspect and fugitive cards! here's how!

hippi longstocking

pippi longstocking on a hip.

the fellow who donated his hip to this fugitive wishes to remain nameless. many thanks to you, mr. anonymous!

a reminder: there's still time left in the contest!

suspect and fugitive card contest!

update: the contest is now over! thanks for your interest!

to celebrate the arrival of the bill cosby card

and the upcoming "bring and brag" lab at velocity, i thought i'd have a little contest! one lucky person can win two packs of suspect and fugitive cards! (1 female fugitive pack and 1 male fugitive pack)

(info on female pack, info on male pack )

to enter, shoot me an email at rakkadeer [at] gmail [dot] com with the subject line "card contest" by friday, august 22nd, 2008, 5 pm (pdt) (find your time zone.)

no, you don't need to include anything in the body of the email. yes, it's open to international readers.

i'll choose someone at random and email the winner by monday, august 25th. please know that i won't be compiling your email addresses into any sort of database. i hate getting spam as much as you do.

best of luck!

peter chalk

peter falk made from sidewalk chalk.

you should be glad that i couldn't find any volunteers for "cobumbo". (that joke is at about the 5:30 mark.)

if time (and a break in precip )allows, i'll take the stencil outside and use the sidewalk chalk on the, well, sidewalk.

lidia

winona ryder as lydia from "beetlejuice" on a lid.

when i was in college, my stepmom always used to say that she thought i looked like winona ryder in her early roles. i wouldn't (and didn't) place much stock in that assessment, however, because she has really poor vision.

julia filed

julia child on a file folder.

just when i thought i couldn't hero worship julia child any more, a report was released this past week showing that she was part of the oss, an anti nazi spy ring!

marinara

it's difficult to find a good image of yoshitomo nara to work with. (i'm not sure if he's camera shy or perhaps would rather have his work stand on its own or, you know, some other reason.)

anyway, the lack of good source material is why i've started today's post with one of his superflat girls.

here's the marinara portrait.

(yoshitomo nara made from marinara sauce.)

should i expound upon how much i love nara's work? nah, i won't bore you with that. besides, i need to eat breakfast.

cylon toast

looks like i'm on a robot kick. anyway, for you "battlestar galactica" fans (and i know there are some who read this blog), here's some cylon toast.

(cylon on toast.)

yeah, it's kinda' hard to see. i also had to have leff verify that what i was about to stencil was, indeed, a cylon. (t eh sci-fi, i'm doin' it wrong.)

thanks to vanlal for translating "toaster" for me and also to pip for his idea of cylon toast.

velocity "bring and brag" lab!

hey there, wonderful readers! this is just a note to let you know that i'll be giving a short talk about suspect and fugitive at the next velocity lab on wed, august 20th sometime during the 6-8pm time window!

if you're in seattle, please drop by! it's being sponsored by dry soda so you'll be able to drink your fill. you might also be lucky enough to score one of these delicious cherry mini cupcakes!

did i mention that cakespy jessie will also be speaking? you guys KNOW how fabulous she is, right?

velocity "bring and brag" lab!
where: velocity art and design (251 Yale Ave N., Seattle WA 98109)
when: wed, 8/20/08, 6-8 pm (pdt)
why: why not? it's free and i'll have some cards to give away to one lucky winner!

tangy trio

i've always enjoyed the word "tang". (the drink...eh, not so much after the age of 10.)

i love the word so much that i decided to make three fugitives in its onamonapeaic honor. first up, the punny.

tang lee. in other words, ang lee made from tang.

next it's all about the astronaut association.

neil armstrong made from tang.

when i was little i used to drink tang and play like i was in outer space. look, someone had to do it, alright?

finally, it's the ridiculous.

enter the wu-tang, y'all. (for leff 'cause he's all "wu tang forever!". hee hee)

spikeal phelps

michael phelps made from spike.

i love olympic swimming events so i've really enjoyed michael phelp's stupendous performance at the water cube.

although, i have to admit, i am finding it pretty funny that nbc only films phelps above the waist. (you have to scroll a bit but it's worth it.)

isaac clays

isaac hayes made from blue clay mask.

how sad was it to read of isaac hayes' death yesterday? i'm not sure why the news hit me quite as hard as it did but, i'll admit, i'm fairly depressed about it.

on a happy note, however, isaac hayes was the keynote speaker at my college graduation from umemphis. all 5,000 or so of the people in my graduating class (and the 20,000 or so in the bleachers at the (now abandonned) "tomb of doom") roared with laughter when he stepped up to the mike and announced in his deep voice "hello, children!"

isaac hayes, i'll miss your hot buttered soul.

tim gumm

tim gunn on gum.

i feel like i made this work. however, i'm still left wondering what happened to andre...

carry on!

a quick reminder to all you crafty folk

applications are currently being accepted for urban craft uprising! if you'd like to be a part of seattle's most aweseome craft fair, don't delay! send in your application today!

orlando broom

orlando bloom on a broom.

how many of you were swept away by his roles in both "the lord of the rings" and "pirates of the caribbean" films? (*ba doom ching!* thank you, cleveland! i'll be here all week!)

here's the long shot for those of you into that sort of thing.

i find that he goes well with my kim novac.

i have no additional commentary on rita, sorry. time's short today.

skull a day sugar skull!

noah from skull a day is awesome! i'm fairly certain that the entire internet knows this already but it never hurts to reiterate.

in addition to being a wonderful person and, as mentioned above, awesome, he's also been super kind to me! case in point, he granted me an interview on the skull a day 2.0 site!

he's so sweet!

anyway, as kind of a "thank you" for all of his wonderful support to date, today's fugitive is a sugar skull.

i made it using noah's two part skull stencil with red sanding sugar and powdered sugar. (so it's twice as sweet.)

anyway, many, many thanks to noah! i can't wait to purchase a copy of his book when it comes out!

a p.s. to fugitive fans -- there are still cards for sale in my etsy shop!

Wednesday, August 6, 2008

i've sold my soul...

...and now you can own a tiny piece of it!

no, not really. but i do have suspect and fugitive cards for sale at my etsy shop!

michael j. box

moving away from mayberry, it's michael j. fox on a box.

michael j. is absolutely one of my most favorite canadians. if he hadn't been in "back to the future", there's a good chance that i never would've developed an interest in skateboarding (and skatboarders) or black flag.

thank you, michael j. fox!

pink floyd

howard mcnear as floyd the barber made with pink food dye.

yeah, pink floyd is an old joke. it also happens to be a pretty good one, imho.

candy taylor

andy griffith as sheriff andy taylor made from orange candy powder.

what's orange candy powder? it's sweetened orange flavored powder that comes in this:

when i was little i used to mix the powder with water and play like it was juice. classy!

Sunday, August 3, 2008

foamer pyle

gaaaaaw-lee! it's jim nabors as gomer pyle on a styrofoam block!

are you seeing a "mayberry" theme? i think i'm going to run with that for a while.

a half year bonus!

as a bonus on the half way day, i thought it would be cool to see all the fugitives at once!

yes, there are five extras. thanks for counting! (also thanks to leff for his photoshop skillz!)

barney knife

today i'm at the halfway mark with suspect and fugitive. hooray!

in honor of getting to day 183, this saturday, after drinking an "austin speedball" (a.ka.-a beer and a cup of coffee) i made a nonfugitive fugitive. in other words, it's my favorite tv cop (that's the nonfugitive part) made in nonarchival materials!

don knotts as barney fife made from food dye on a knife.

anyway, i'm off to celebrate. see you tomorrow!

bagatha christie

agatha christie on a paper bag.

mrs. christie is my favorite dame. i always read her mysteries (poirot over marple) when i'm on vacation.
